Early Schools

By the early 1890s, four schools were in operation: Washington School at Washington and Walker Avenue [315 S Walker]; Emerson School at Seventh and Walker Avenue [715 N. Walker “out in the cornfield”]; Webster School at 220 E. California; and Irving High School at 410 N Walnut in the Military Addition.

The earliest schools were subscription schools, convened wherever space could be found, in a tent or storefront.
